BABASSU MESOCARP
As a socio-environmental diversity of Xingu, babassu mesocarp is produced by the traditional producing populations of Terra do Meio in the Xingu Territory from fresh babassu seeds. Babassu is harvested and processed by residents of the Xingu Extractive Reserves using methods that support forest conservation. Babassu (Attalea speciosa) is a highly versatile product of socio-environmental diversity, used by traditional populations and Indigenous peoples in the Amazon for both food and skin and hair care. Both the harvesting of babassu and the production of mesocarp are carried out by extractivists and Indigenous people who are part of the Terra do Meio Network, an arrangement composed of community stores and mini-mills in the Xingu Territory.
