Products ARTS, CRAFT AND DECORATION

AMITIKATXI CRAFT

Tiriyó Katxuyana Txikiyana Indigenous women create art from beads, seeds, and cotton, which serves as a way to strengthen their knowledge and life in the forest. Weaving bracelets, necklaces, earrings, belts, rings, loincloths, and baskets with beads and seeds is one of the activities that bring the most joy to the Tiriyó Katxuyana Txikiyana women and many other Indigenous peoples of Tumucumaque. Whether to give as a gift to their relatives and partners or for sale, these Indigenous women bring traditional knowledge and creativity to their seed and bead pieces. The women often gather to work with seeds and beads, bringing together daughters, granddaughters, grandmothers, and sisters, or they may work more privately, sitting in their hammocks or the courtyard of their villages. This is how they share their knowledge of different techniques, color combinations, and graphic patterns in creating various body adornments. For these Indigenous peoples, their arts and crafts are deeply connected to the forest and the cerrado where they live, not only through the collection of materials like different seeds, fibers, woods, and clay but also through the inspiration they draw from the designs traditionally learned from encounters with other beings, whether plants, animals, or even spiritual entities. In this sense, the continuation of these arts and crafts also ensures the continuity of the knowledge related to the forest and cerrado, as well as renewed creative expression informed by the traditions of these indigenous peoples.
