Handmade candle Handmade candles produced by the Kayapó people using the Brazil nut shell. The production of these handmade candles from Brazil nut shells is a recent activity adopted to reuse the shells that were once discarded in the forest. This activity generates income for Kayapó families and contributes to the conservation of the Amazon and the economic development of the involved communities. The Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa), also known as the Amazon nut, is the seed of the Brazil nut tree, a native tree of the Amazon that can grow to a hight of 45 meters. The collection of Brazil nuts is a traditional activity of the Kayapó people and takes place during the rainy season in the Amazon. Groups spend many days in the forest, setting up camp among the trees and patrolling a large area of the forest, contributing to the monitoring of their territory.
