FABRIC PAINTING
The beautiful fabric paintings made by Kayapó women reflect both collective knowledge and the individual creativity of each artist. The patterns created by Kayapó women, whether on bodies or canvases, are called 'ôk'. Kayapó artists develop these patterns by capturing and reinventing elements of their cosmology, such as animals and plants, with each work reflecting both collective knowledge and the individual creativity of the person. Traditionally painted on the body, Kayapó women began painting on fabric as an alternative source of income and to promote indigenous art.
