BABASSU FLOUR

A product of the social and environmental diversity of the Xingu, babassu flour is produced from the mesocarp (pulp) of the babassu. Babassu (Attalea speciosa) is a highly versatile product used by traditional populations and Indigenous peoples in the Amazon for food, as well as for skin and hair care. The flour produced from the babassu mesocarp, collected and processed in mini-mills in the Amazon, is a nutritious ingredient rich in fiber, calcium, iron, and minerals, used in the preparation of porridges, cakes, and bread. The collection and processing of babassu are carried out by traditional populations and Indigenous peoples in the Amazon. Both the collection of babassu and the production of flour are carried out by extractivists and Indigenous people who are part of the Terra do Meio Network in Pará, an arrangement composed of community stores and mini-mills in the Xingu Territory.
