Honey – Xingu Indigenous Peoples

The Mel dos Índios do Xingu (Honey of the Indigenous Peoples of Xingu) brand was established in 2001, marking the beginning of commercial beekeeping within the Xingu Indigenous Territory (TIX). It was the first Indigenous product in Brazil to receive both the Federal Inspection Service (SIF) certification and the organic product seal. For the peoples of the TIX, honey production has had positive impacts, generating income while also contributing to food security and territorial protection. Beekeeping is carried out by men, women, and youth from the Ikpeng, Kalapalo, Kawaiweté, Khisêtjê, Kuikuro, Matipu, Panará, Tapaiuna, and Yudjá peoples, and is deeply rooted in their practices, knowledge, and cultural protocols. It is a profitable and sustainable activity that supports the management of forests and grasslands. The ecological characteristics and environmental integrity of the TIX result in a unique, high-quality product that has earned strong recognition in the market. Each jar of honey reflects the distinct taste and aroma of the dominant wildflower bloom from the producing village. In this way, Mel dos Índios do Xingu highlights the diversity of forest landscapes and flowering cycles within the territory, which are inseparable from the ways of life of its peoples.
