Castanha, Sunflower & Quinoa Oven-Baked Bread

Part of the Brazil nuts purchased by Wickbold comes directly from Indigenous, riverside, and quilombola communities that help conserve the Amazon rainforest. The Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa), also known as castanha-da-amazônia or castanha-do-pará, is the seed of the Brazil nut tree, a native species of the Amazon that can grow up to 45 meters tall. The collection of Brazil nuts is a traditional activity carried out by Indigenous peoples and traditional populations during the rainy season in the Amazon. To gather the nuts, groups spend many consecutive days in the forest, setting up camp among the trees and covering wide areas—an activity that not only generates income but also contributes to monitoring and protecting the territory. With one of the highest trade volumes in the Amazon, the Brazil nut holds vast potential for income generation for thousands of Indigenous peoples, quilombolas, and extractivist communities. When sourced through ethical trade relations—with transparency, traceability, and respect for origin—the Brazil nut becomes a versatile ingredient, consumed directly, used in the food industry, or transformed into a wide range of products.
