Pirarucu
Pirarucu is sourced from sustainable management by traditional populations in the Solimões Territory, in the Amazon. The pirarucu, known as the Amazon giant, is the largest freshwater fish with scales in the world, reaching up to 440 lbs and 9.4 ft in length. In recent years, the pirarucu that reaches consumers has been the result of more than two decades of sustainable management, a work carried out by regional managers, combining traditional and scientific knowledge with the support of the Mamirauá Institute. Over the years, this effort has resulted in a more than 400% increase in pirarucu populations in rivers and lakes of the Solimões Territory, with essential components of sustainable management being counting and monitoring to prevent illegal activities. The sustainable management of pirarucu is one of the region’s main economic activities, playing a central role in the conservation of the species and the biodiversity of the Amazon.
