AMAZON NUT

The Amazon nut (Bertholletia excelsa), also known as Brazil nut or Pará nut, is the seed of the Brazil nut tree, a native tree of the Amazon that can reach up to 147 ft in height. The collection of nuts is a traditional activity carried out by the people who live in the Unini Extractive Reserve in the Rio Negro Territory, contributing to the valorization of the standing forest and its people. To collect the nuts, groups spend many consecutive days in the forest, setting up camp among the trees and patrolling a large area of forest, contributing to territorial monitoring. With one of the largest marketing volumes in the Amazon, the Brazil nut is a product with great potential to generate income for thousands of Indigenous, quilombola, and extractivist populations. Brazil nuts, sourced through ethical commercial relationships with transparency, traceability, and origin, are a versatile ingredient that can be used for direct consumption, as an ingredient in the food industry, and in the production of various products in the cosmetics industry.
